Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, urging the department to deny New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani a federal security clearance. The letter cites concerns about Mamdani’s past conduct and associations, which Biggs argues present national security risks.

The letter highlights several points from Mamdani’s record, including his role in co-founding Students for Justice in Palestine, an organization that referred to the October 7 Hamas attack as an “historic win” and advocated for “armed confrontation.” It also notes Mamdani’s participation in rallies supporting resistance “by any means necessary,” his criticism of U.S. counterterrorism efforts, and his public statements against law enforcement agencies such as the NYPD.

“Mamdani has a well-established pattern of siding with extremists, undermining U.S. counterterrorism efforts, demonizing law enforcement, and legitimizing violent movements,” said Congressman Biggs.

“He has spent years defending extremists, attacking American law enforcement, and aligning himself with individuals who praise terrorists. Putting classified material in his hands would be a direct threat to NYPD officers, federal agents, and the security of this country.

“Security clearances are reserved for individuals who can be trusted with the nation’s most sensitive materials—a standard Mamdani doesn’t come close to meeting. His record is a bold red warning flag. DHS must reject his request without hesitation.”

The letter was cosigned by Representatives Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Andy Ogles (R-TN), Eli Crane (R-AZ), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Mary Miller (R-IL), Keith Self (R-TX), and Marlin Stutzman (R-IN).

Andy Biggs has represented Arizona’s 5th congressional district since 2017 after succeeding Richard Miranda. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the Arizona Senate from 2013 to 2017. He was born in Tucson in 1958 and currently resides in Gilbert. Biggs holds degrees from Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona.
