Erik Guderian has been named the new Director of the City of Mesa’s Transportation Department, following his service as Interim Department Director since March 2025. Guderian stepped into the interim role after the passing of former director RJ Zeder and officially assumed the permanent position on December 2, 2025.

Mesa City Manager Scott Butler stated, “Erik brings the foundational expertise and institutional knowledge needed to lead the Transportation Department to the next level. I am confident in his leadership, and we are fortunate to have someone who has earned the trust of both staff and community stakeholders. His appointment ensures a seamless and positive transition for the department.”

Guderian has more than two decades of experience in transportation engineering and planning. His career has centered on developing infrastructure that helps residents travel safely throughout Mesa.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents of the City of Mesa and to work alongside our outstanding Transportation Department team,” said Guderian. “Together, we will continue to maintain and grow our transportation network that allows everyone to move safely and efficiently to the places that matter most to them within our City.”

Guderian joined Mesa’s Transportation Department in 2015 as Assistant Transportation Director. Before working with Mesa, he held positions with the Town of Gilbert, Arizona, and worked as a transportation consultant in Denver, Colorado.
