Coalition urges Congress to maintain USMCA amid ongoing joint review

A coalition of over 500 business and agriculture organizations, along with chambers of commerce from across the United States, has sent a letter to Congress expressing continued support for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The letter was addressed to Ambassador Greer and distributed via the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The signatories emphasized the importance of USMCA for the American economy, noting that trade with Canada and Mexico supports more than 13 million jobs in the United States. According to the coalition, U.S. manufacturers export more goods to these two neighboring countries than to the next twelve largest export markets combined. Additionally, Canada and Mexico account for one-third of all U.S. agricultural exports.

The letter also highlighted that Canada and Mexico are the leading export destinations for small and medium-sized businesses in the United States, with more than 100,000 such companies selling their products and services to these markets.

“While a number of important compliance issues require greater attention and remediation through the ‘joint review’ now under way, USMCA remains critical to our economic future because it preserves and strengthens U.S. trade ties to Canada and Mexico,” stated the coalition in its message.

The agreement is credited with ensuring that American manufacturers, farmers, and service providers continue to have access to Canadian and Mexican markets. It guarantees that nearly all U.S. exports enter these countries without tariffs, supporting American companies as they compete in key export markets.

“The case for maintaining this agreement is strong. We look forward to working closely with you to preserve these benefits over the course of the joint review,” concluded the letter.
