Students and staff at Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) are participating in before and after-school programs designed to support learning outside of regular classroom hours. Each October, these programs are highlighted nationally during Lights On Afterschool, an event organized by the Afterschool Alliance to recognize the impact of such initiatives on students, families, and communities.

This year, GPS marked Lights On Afterschool with glow-in-the-dark parties at several elementary schools. These events included students from a range of before and after-school offerings, including the Very Important Kids (VIK) Club—recently awarded and accredited—as well as Gilbert Youth Athletics (GYA) and specialized Enrichment Classes. These programs aim to help students develop new skills and interests that complement their academic experience.

According to GPS, providing quality before and after-school programming is part of its ongoing commitment to student development. “Our goal is always to provide our students with quality programs before and after school, so they have space to learn and grow,” the district stated.

Students have responded positively to these opportunities. One fifth-grade participant said her favorite aspect is having “a safe place to go where she can simply hang out and be a kid” with friends. A fourth grader described his enjoyment in meeting new peers and helping them feel welcome as part of his responsibilities within the program.

The district expressed appreciation for its staff’s efforts: “As we conclude this year’s Lights On Afterschool celebration, we thank our dedicated staff for their commitment to safety and enrichment. Their work helps support students holistically to build a strong foundation for academic success.” More information about VIK, GYA, and Enrichment Classes is available on the district’s website.
