Rep. Greg Stanton, a U.S. Congressman from Arizona, used his social media platform on November 5, 2025, to criticize House Republicans for their absence during what he described as the longest government shutdown in history and to address constitutional concerns regarding presidential authority.
In a post made at 17:15 UTC on November 5, Stanton questioned the accountability of House Republicans during the ongoing government shutdown. He wrote, “If you didn’t show up for work for two months, what do you think would happen? House Republicans are sitting at home while we set a new record for the longest shutdown ever. They should come back to Washington and get to work.”
Later that day, at 20:30 UTC, Stanton posted another message containing only an emoji and a link: ” https://t.co/oDRVGZevd0″.
At 21:55 UTC on the same day, Stanton addressed actions by the president regarding constitutional powers. He stated, “The president can’t rewrite the Constitution because of a so-called “emergency.” I’ve helped lead the fight in Congress to stand up to this illegal end-run around congressional authority. Now it’s in the Supreme Court’s hands.”
Stanton has represented Arizona in Congress through several election cycles. In 2024, he was re-elected after defeating Kelly Cooper with 52.7% of the vote compared to Cooper’s 45.5%. In the previous cycle in 2022, Stanton also prevailed over Cooper with a margin of 56% to 43.1%.
