Local businesses and community leaders discussed ways to enhance Gilbert’s appeal as a tourist destination during a Business Retention and Expansion Roundtable, according to an April 8 release. The discussion focused on how placemaking, programming, and collaboration can improve the visitor experience and encourage repeat visits.
The conversation is significant as tourism expectations shift, with visitors now seeking more curated experiences rather than just dining or shopping. This trend presents both challenges and opportunities for Gilbert’s business community.
Participants highlighted features that make Gilbert unique in the region, including its vibrant downtown area with a family-friendly atmosphere, the Riparian Preserve offering outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing, and SanTan Village’s open-air shopping environment. The town was described as having “a strong sense of place” that combines small-town warmth with growing amenities.
Business leaders said that attracting visitors remains a challenge but emphasized that those who come often enjoy their time in Gilbert. They noted the importance of providing experience-driven tourism through arts events, local dining options, public art installations like murals, seasonal campaigns such as festivals or art walks, and improved transportation options between activity centers. Ideas included introducing flexible mobility services like Waymo or trolleys to connect key destinations within town.
The roundtable also addressed infrastructure needs such as signage for events and destinations while recognizing existing challenges around aligning rules for outdoor displays. Participants agreed that expanding resort-style amenities and signature events could help keep Gilbert competitive among regional destinations.
