The Kyrene Esports Varsity and Junior Varsity Championships took place on Saturday, September 20, at the Kyrene Esports Arena inside Kyrene Traditional Academy. The event drew families, friends, and students from across the district to support participants in an atmosphere similar to traditional sporting events.
Pete Flocken, director of information technology for the district, explained the origins of the program: “Kyrene’s information technology department started this program a few years ago as a way to bring kids together around something they love and increase opportunities for belonging at their schools. It’s grown into a districtwide league where students get to represent their schools, build teamwork and experience competition in a really positive way.”
Over seven weeks, six schools—Altadeña, Akimel A-al, Aprende, Kyrene Middle School, KTA and Pueblo—competed in the league. More than 30 student competitors participated in the championships. In the Junior Varsity final, Altadeña defeated Akimel A-al in a 3-on-3 match. Later that day, Altadeña also won against Aprende in the varsity final and received the district-championship banner.
Following these matches, varsity finalists from Altadeña and Aprende played together in an All-Star Showcase featuring exhibition games. This allowed all students to participate while families watched from the stands.
Flocken commented on what it meant for participants: “Seeing these middle school students play in the Esports Arena with their families cheering them on was incredible. For many of them, it was the first time their passion for gaming was celebrated like a traditional sport.”
A total of 101 students practiced twice weekly throughout the season leading up to this event. The championship provided an opportunity for young gamers to demonstrate how esports can foster community among schools and families.
