Thousands of students, staff, and families in the Kyrene School District are set to participate in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day this Friday. The district is joining schools across the country in activities aimed at addressing racism and bullying. The initiative draws inspiration from Ruby Bridges, who became a symbol of the civil rights movement as a six-year-old integrating William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960.
At Kyrene Traditional Academy, students will take part in a symbolic walk into school beginning at 7:00 a.m. on November 14, entering through the Galveston entrance. This will be followed by an outdoor assembly at the campus located at 3375 W. Galveston St., Chandler.
Kyrene Aprende Middle School and Kyrene de las Brisas Elementary School will hold their events starting with an assembly at 8:45 a.m., followed by a walk along Desert Breeze Park. More than 1,300 students are expected to participate alongside families, staff, and distinguished guests at the schools’ shared location on 777 N. Desert Breeze Blvd., Chandler.
The events mark the fourth annual walk honoring Ruby Bridges’ legacy within these campuses. According to organizers, media representatives are encouraged to join and document the event alongside students.
Erin Helm, Executive Director of Communications and Engagement for Kyrene School District, is listed as the media contact for further information.
