Mesa is set to open the Gateway Library, its first new full-service library in three decades, on Saturday, December 6 at 10 a.m. The new facility is located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway and aims to provide innovative spaces and programs for the community.
Mayor Mark Freeman commented on the significance of the project: “The Gateway Library is a beautifully designed facility that reflects what it means for Mesa to be a full-service city. This is one of the many amenities we are proud to provide for our residents. I’m excited to celebrate its opening and grateful to Mesa’s voters for supporting the bond issue that made this project possible.”
The library covers 28,000 square feet with an open design featuring rows of books under high ceilings and bright lighting. It offers several amenities including a multipurpose room, collaborative makerspace called THINKspot, digital art wall, study rooms, hold lockers, teen lounge, and a children’s area. Outdoor reading patios and an event plaza connect indoor activities with outside space. The building has received recognition from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and American Library Association (ALA) with a 2024 Library Interior Design Award.
Gateway Library is certified as an Autism Center by IBCCES and features a sensory room designed to support neurodiverse visitors through specialized lighting, colors, acoustics, and furnishings. Mesa was previously recognized as the first Autism Certified City in the country.
Vice Mayor Somers highlighted the importance of libraries in local communities: “Opening the Gateway Library is a major milestone for our community and one that has been a long time coming,” said Vice Mayor Somers. “This reflects our belief that libraries are essential to building strong, educated and connected neighborhoods. Southeast Mesa has been waiting patiently for a resource like this , and I’m thrilled that families, students and lifelong learners will now have a world-class library close to home.”
Polly Bonnett, Director of Mesa Public Library added: “We are excited to cut the ribbon and open this stunning, innovative library that will provide a much-needed service and space for the entire community in this part of Mesa,” said Polly Bonnett, Mesa Public Library Director. “The library is a beacon of creativity and opportunity for all, and we can’t wait for our residents to see all that Gateway Library has to offer.”
Following Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony there will be family activities until 2 p.m., such as henna art, face painting, bubble artists, photo booths with book characters in costume, live music performances, historical games presented by Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as part of America 250 celebrations as well as interactive stations from various city departments including Fire & Medical Services.
Visitors can also participate in exploring features throughout the building using special passports which can earn them prizes.
Funding came from both voter-approved general obligation bonds from 2018 along with construction sales tax revenue; Willmeng Construction built it while Richrd Kennedy Architects provided design services.
Gateway Library serves all residents though it sits within Eastmark neighborhood boundaries; anyone who lives or works in Maricopa County can obtain free library cards through Mesa Public Library. Full operating hours start Monday December 8: Monday-Thursday from 10am–8pm; Friday-Saturday from 10am–5pm.
