At the Mesa Public Schools board meeting on December 11, Johnson Elementary was recognized as the Spotlight School for the month. This recognition is part of a year-long initiative to highlight outstanding schools in the district during the 2025-2026 academic year.

Principal Omar Tabb spoke about three individuals who were honored for their contributions to the school community.

Student Afton Waldie was commended for exemplifying key qualities valued by Johnson Elementary and Mesa Public Schools. According to Principal Tabb, “We are thrilled to celebrate Afton Waldie for being a shining example of the ‘Johnson Way’. She consistently exhibits essential attitudes and skills that make a great learner, classmate, and community member!” He highlighted her ethical responsibility, collaborative nature, creative thinking, and inclusiveness. “Afton is a true example of a Mesa Public Schools Portrait of a Graduate because she: Ethical and Responsible: She acts with character and is always willing to take responsibility for her words and actions. A Great Collaborator and Community Contributor: She is excellent at working with others, learning from and supporting her classmates, and bringing people together for a common good. A Creative Thinker: Her curiosity and imagination allow her to come up with new ideas and help solve problems in new ways that support the school community. Inclusive: Afton knows how to find common ground with everyone and seek to understand the ideas of others. She sees strength in differences, making everyone feel valued.” He concluded by thanking her “for always demonstrating what it means to be a true leader in our school community.”

Dianne Galligher was recognized as an outstanding certified staff member. Principal Tabb described Dianne as “a truly exceptional teacher, an outstanding colleague, and a vibrant leader whose contributions significantly enrich our campus community.” Dianne has been associated with Johnson Elementary since 1998 when she started as a crossing guard before moving through various roles including playground aide, cafeteria aide, library aide, classroom aide, attendance clerk, student teacher, and finally full-time teacher beginning in 2006. As Principal Tabb noted: “Dianne’s commitment to Johnson School is unparalleled… Dianne embodies the qualities of a dedicated educator, a compassionate colleague, and a thoughtful leader.” He also praised her innovation in teaching practices as well as her efforts outside the classroom such as maintaining the school’s courtyard garden.

Norma Sprout received recognition among classified staff members for over two decades of service at Johnson Elementary. Principal Tabb said: “Norma has been at Johnson for 21 years. She has spent those years in unwavering dedication to the students, families, and broader community of Johnson Elementary.” He emphasized that while Norma’s main responsibilities are within her classroom environment she goes beyond expectations by engaging positively with all students across campus.

The board’s monthly Spotlight School initiative continues throughout this school year highlighting exemplary work happening across Mesa Public Schools.
