Candice Gonzales, the longtime girls’ basketball coach at Mesquite High School, served as head coach for the West Team in the 2026 McDonald’s All-American Girls Basketball Game on March 31.
Gonzales was chosen from a national pool of candidates, highlighting her long-standing impact on student-athletes at Mesquite High. The recognition brings attention to her record of achievement and underscores the significance of local educators reaching national platforms.
Over her 28-year career at Mesquite, Gonzales has accumulated 544 wins with a winning percentage of 66% across more than 800 games. She has led the Lady Wildcats to two state championships and four appearances in title games. In 2025, she received the Spirit of Cotton Award from the Phoenix Suns and Mercury Foundation, which included a $10,000 donation to support Mesquite High’s girls’ basketball program. Before coaching, Gonzales won two state championships as a player at Gilbert High and continued her career at Grand Canyon University where she was named Conference Player of the Year. She also tried out for professional teams including the Phoenix Mercury and Utah Starzz.
Basketball success runs in Gonzales’ family: while preparing for the All-American game, she supported one son competing in an NCAA Division II tournament and another daughter who won a JUCO National Championship. Another daughter plays professionally in Spain while her youngest recently won an Arizona state championship under Gonzales’ coaching at Mesquite.
During her tenure with Mesquite High School’s Wildcat family, more than 45 players have advanced to collegiate athletics under her guidance; four have reached professional levels. The McDonald’s All-American event allowed Gonzales to coach twelve top seniors from across the country during a nationally televised game held at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Teams practiced at NBA training facilities and participated in community service projects prior to competition.
