Nearly 30,000 participants took part in the 22nd annual Pat’s Run through the streets of Tempe on April 11. The event is held each year as the main fundraiser for the Pat Tillman Foundation and honors the legacy of Pat Tillman, a former football player and Army Ranger.
The race is significant as it brings together thousands to remember Tillman’s life and service. It also raises funds that support scholarships for military veterans and their spouses through the foundation.
This year’s race began with actor, comedian, and veteran Rob Riggle serving as both starter and participant. Riggle, who previously served in Afghanistan and Liberia as a Marine, is known for his roles on “The Daily Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and films such as “Step Brothers” and “The Hangover.” The race covers a distance of 4.2 miles, ending at Mountain America Stadium’s 42-yard line—an homage to Tillman’s Arizona State University jersey number.
Pat’s Run stands among the largest races nationally by attendance each year. Alongside the main event in Tempe, dozens of honor runs take place across other cities in recognition of Tillman’s impact.
At this year’s finish line, runners received medals before heading to a post-race tailgate featuring food and live music from local band Azz Izz. According to a press release, Arizona State University is partnering with Argos Vision—a tech startup developing smart traffic cameras—for a one-year pilot program aimed at improving safety around Phoenix using data-driven technology.
Arizona State University has been recognized for its innovative work; it was named number one in innovation for eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report according to the university. ASU also received high rankings in undergraduate business, nursing, and engineering programs.
