As electric air taxis move closer to everyday use, Arizona lawmakers are considering how to integrate this technology into the state’s transportation system. Senate Appropriations and Transportation Committee Chairman David Farnsworth is working with aviation experts, local partners, and industry leaders to prepare Arizona for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
AAM refers to a transportation system that uses electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing for short-distance passenger travel. While the idea may seem new, similar systems are already being tested in countries like China, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. These “air taxis” could help reduce traffic congestion, improve access in rural areas, and support emergency operations.
The AAM network depends on specialized landing sites. Vertiports serve as full-scale facilities offering passenger services, charging stations, large landing pads, and air traffic control. They are designed for lightweight electric aircraft rather than helicopters. Vertistops are smaller locations meant for quick landings and departures, similar to bus stops. Both types of facilities would allow flexible service across urban and rural communities.
“We are not preparing for science fiction; we are preparing for the reality that is already unfolding around the world,” said Chairman Farnsworth. “Advanced Air Mobility offers an opportunity to rethink how we transport people and goods in a faster, safer, and more sustainable way. Arizona possesses the talent, space, and vision to take the lead in this field. I am committed to establishing a solid foundation now to transform the future of travel into a reality. My dedication lies in ensuring that Arizona remains at the forefront while prioritizing public safety and fiscal responsibility as policy develops.”
Warren Petersen was elected as a Republican member of the Arizona State Senate in 2023 for the 14th District after succeeding David Gowan.
