Gilbert, Arizona - October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior that includes the use of threats of violence and intimidation for the purpose of gaining power and control over another person.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone in any community regardless of race, education level, religion, gender, etc.
This year's DVAM theme is #Every1KnowsSome1, a theme meant to highlight how common domestic violence is and that it can be more than physical violence.
In Gilbert, the Gilbert Police Department's Family Violence Unit (FVU) is committed to stopping the dangerous trend in our community. The family violence unit is currently made up of four detectives and a sergeant who receive extensive training in forensic interviewing and strangulation investigation, to better serve the unique dynamics of family violence. FVU detectives also investigate child abuse and elderly abuse cases, working closely with the Department of Child Safety and Adult Protective Services.
