You can prevent smoke detector false alarms.
This past week, Gilbert Fire & Rescue was dispatched to 24 false fire alarms.
There are a few reasons why your detectors may alarm when the temperatures drop:
• Low batteries: When batteries are low the smoke detector will usually beep every few minutes or so to signal that the batteries need to be replaced.
• Condensation (water vapor): The sensor is a particle sensing device, so when water condenses in the sensor, the unit will go into alarm.
Prevent your household from experiencing a 3 AM wake-up call with these tips
Test battery once a month
Clean smoke detectors twice a year
Replace batteries every year
Replace smoke detectors every 10 years
Gilbert Fire & Rescue now offers a new service to assist residents with installing and maintaining their smoke detectors.
