CHANDLER, Ariz. — Misty Gustafson, Chandler’s homeless programs supervisor, has been recognized as the 2023 Beth McDonald Woman of the Year. Gustafson was honored at a banquet hosted by iHeartMedia’s 99.9 KEZ and Shea Homes on Feb. 28, where she received a $7,500 cash prize as part of the accolade.

Gustafson, who has been with the City of Chandler for four years, manages the city’s homeless outreach and non-congregate shelter programs. Overcoming personal challenges, including homelessness and addiction, she has successfully broken the cycle of generational addiction and poverty to create a better life for herself, her husband, and adopted daughter.

In her own words, Gustafson expressed, "The challenges I’ve overcome are the same challenges faced by the people I’m trying to help in Chandler. Now six years clean and sober, I can relate to those I’m trying to help — I’ve been to prison and have experienced homelessness. My team and I help our clients get off the streets and connect to services to help make their lives better."

Nominated by her husband, Gustafson accepted the award surrounded by her family, mentor, and work family, showcasing the support system that has played a crucial role in her journey of personal and professional growth.
