Tempe officials are inviting residents to provide input on the potential expansion of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in the city. According to a recent announcement, the city is considering updates to zoning code regulations that govern ADUs, and public feedback is being sought through a series of meetings and an online survey.
"Share your feedback at virtual and in-person meetings; the same information will be shared at all meetings," said city officials. The input gathered will help shape a final draft to be presented to the City Council. The meetings will cover topics such as parking, restrictions on short-term rentals, and building permit frequency.
Residents can participate in the process by attending the upcoming meetings, including a virtual meeting on Wednesday, March 27 at noon, and in-person meetings on various dates and locations throughout March and April. Additionally, an online survey will be available from March 27 to May 1 on the city's website.
The city of Tempe has already conducted two meetings and an online survey to gather public feedback on ADUs. The Neighborhood Advisory Commission has recommended further research and drafting of ADU regulations based on the initial input received.
City staff has been conducting analysis and research on the potential expansion of ADUs, following the City Council's directive from last year. The council emphasized the importance of community outreach to ensure that all stakeholders have the opportunity to provide input on the city's plans.
Among the reasons for considering ADU expansion, Tempe is looking to address needs such as increasing affordable housing options, creating housing diversity, adding incremental density while preserving neighborhood character, facilitating multi-generational living, and supporting aging in place. ADUs also present an opportunity for homeowners to generate additional income.
Following the public input period, the next steps will involve drafting ADU regulations and concepts for consideration by the City Council. A Work Study Session will be scheduled in the future to provide further guidance.
Residents interested in receiving updates on ADUs can sign up for email notifications on the city's website. For media inquiries, individuals can contact Susie Steckner at susie_steckner@tempe.gov or 480-604-6128.
