Tempe's Mill Avenue is gearing up for a major makeover with the commencement of the Downtown Refresh Project. The project, set to kick off in early April 2024, aims to revamp the Mill Avenue Streetscape from University Drive to Rio Salado Parkway, marking the first significant renovation on this stretch of road in approximately 40 years.
According to a city official, "It’s the first renovation of its kind on Mill Avenue in about 40 years."
The extensive project will involve various enhancements, including sidewalk and ADA improvements to create more public space, a new planting scheme incorporating sustainable practices like water harvesting, infrastructure upgrades to electric and irrigation systems, installation of shade structures, new lighting, and art installations. The construction will be carried out in multiple phases, with the initial focus being on the improvements to the Mill Avenue/University Drive intersection.
Work at the Mill Avenue/University Drive intersection is scheduled to commence in early April, with lane restrictions and turn restrictions in place as necessary to ensure a safe work environment. This phase of the project is anticipated to be completed by August 2024. Importantly, the construction schedule has been designed to accommodate planned events in downtown Tempe and Valley Metro schedules, with access to Mill Avenue businesses set to remain open throughout the construction period.
In a call for community engagement, the city encourages individuals to "Share your story ideas with us! Email CMR@tempe.gov with details and contact information."
As the Mill Avenue Refresh project unfolds, residents and visitors can look forward to a revitalized streetscape that combines aesthetic enhancements with functional improvements, creating a more vibrant and accessible urban environment.
