On April 10, 2024, Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) took a stand against the U.S. Department of Education's record-setting $37.7 million fine imposed on Grand Canyon University (GCU). In a letter to the U.S. Department of Education Inspector General Sandra Bruce, Biggs urged for an investigation into the allegations against GCU, the largest Christian university in the nation.
Biggs expressed his concerns, stating, "The Department of Education’s egregious fine against GCU is yet another example of a weaponized federal government.” He emphasized the need for scrutiny into the fine and the evidence supporting the ED’s allegations against GCU.
The fine imposed on GCU stemmed from ED's disapproval of successful for-profit colleges and their opposition to GCU's conversion from for-profit to non-profit status in 2018. Despite receiving support from the Internal Revenue Service, the Higher Learning Commission, and the State of Arizona for this transition, ED has continued to target the university since GCU appealed their refusal to recognize the non-profit status in 2021.
Joining Congressman Biggs in this demand for an investigation are cosigners Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ).
The letter sent to the U.S. Department of Education can be found on the official website. The Daily Caller has also covered this significant development.
It is evident that Congressman Biggs and his colleagues are determined to seek justice for Grand Canyon University and challenge what they perceive as unjust targeting by federal authorities.
