Tempe City Council recently took action to expand affordable housing and amenities in the Apache Corridor, as well as create a new shelter option for those experiencing homelessness. LaVictoria Commons, a new housing development near Apache Boulevard and the Price 101 Freeway, will provide affordable rental and homeownership opportunities. According to the city, the project is part of the Hometown for All initiative aimed at increasing affordable housing in Tempe.

In addition to the housing development, the city also purchased the 58-room Apache Inn to serve as a shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The shelter is expected to open in early 2025 and was funded in part by Maricopa County funds and federal funds allocated to Tempe.

Regarding the new shelter option, a city official mentioned, "More people experiencing homelessness in Tempe will be able to access shelter at a motel purchased by the city, accelerating the pace individuals and families are helped off the streets and into more permanent housing solutions."

As temperatures rise in the Valley, the city is urging residents to stay cool and prepared for the hot summer months. Cooling center sites will open on May 1, with additional resources available for those in need of assistance with rent, utility bills, or emergency home repairs.

In other news, Arizona State University celebrated its largest graduating class in history, with over 20,700 students earning their degrees this May. Various colleges within the university saw significant increases in graduates, with many Arizonans entering the workforce.

Meanwhile, Tempe residents are gearing up for a summer of fun with the return of Movies in the Park and other community events. The city is also encouraging civic engagement among its youth through programs like Tempe Youth Talks, where students can interact with city leaders and provide input on local policies.

Lastly, local businesses like Drink Me! Tea Room are expanding their offerings to meet the changing needs of the community. The tea room now features an express tea bar concept for customers on the go.

Overall, the recent developments in Tempe reflect a commitment to providing affordable housing options, supporting those in need, and fostering a vibrant community for residents and visitors alike.
