The City of Tempe has announced the identification of four new Safety Corridors for traffic enforcement for the third quarter of 2024. This initiative is part of Tempe's Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to reduce serious and fatal traffic injuries to zero.
For July through September 2024, the designated corridors are:
- McClintock Drive – Apache Boulevard to Rio Salado Parkway
- 48th Street – Broadway Road to Southern Avenue
- Baseline Road – McClintock Drive to State Route 101
- Warner Road – Interstate 10 to Priest Drive
These corridors were selected based on an analysis of streets with the highest number of injury collisions, including those resulting in serious physical injuries or fatalities.
"Safety corridors are major supports on our roads,” said Lieutenant Michael Hayes of the Tempe Police Department. “They guide drivers towards safer travel by highlighting danger zones and encouraging responsible driving."
The Safety Corridors initiative employs a three-fold approach: enforcement, engineering, and education—the three "E"s of road safety. Traffic engineers will review each active corridor for necessary updates such as outdated signage, faded pavement markings, or adjustments to traffic signal timings.
To inform drivers and other vulnerable road users about these high-risk areas, yellow banners reading “Safety Corridor – Strict Enforcement” will be displayed along the corridors.
Vision Zero is a data-driven traffic safety policy that takes an ethical approach towards achieving safety for all road users. Tempe joined this worldwide initiative with the goal of reducing fatal and serious injury crashes to zero.
