The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board has decided to rename the airport to Mesa Gateway Airport. This change reflects the growth and economic vitality of the East Valley region, as well as Phoenix's withdrawal from the board. The decision is aligned with the airport's strategic vision for future development.
Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley, Chair of the Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board, stated, "This name change reflects the tremendous growth and economic vitality of the East Valley." She emphasized that with support from Mesa, Gilbert, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, and the Gila River Indian Community, the airport will continue serving as a vital transportation asset for 1.5 million residents.
Mesa Mayor John Giles commented on the city's emergence as a hub for innovation and technology: "As the 36th largest city in the United States...this name change aligns perfectly with Mesa and the East Valley's growing reputation as a prime location for business investment and development."
The renaming comes amid significant expansion at Mesa Gateway Airport. Nearly 2 million passengers were served in FY23, supported by new facilities including a 30,000-square-foot concourse with five additional gates.
Marc Garcia, President and CEO of Visit Mesa, remarked on tourism impacts: "The renaming of Mesa Gateway Airport marks an exciting new chapter in our region's tourism story." He highlighted that an airport representing regional identity enhances tourism growth.
Mesa Gateway Airport currently offers flights to 45 nonstop destinations through carriers like Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines. Allegiant plans to introduce a new route to Colorado Springs in February 2025. The name change is effective immediately.
