Mesa has unveiled the winning designs from its second annual Bikes to Books contest, encouraging the public to explore these artistic creations. The event celebrates art, reading, and community involvement, with local youth transforming bicycle symbols into imaginative works.
The 2024 contest featured a range of creative designs, including depictions of a turtle, a dragon, and desert landscapes. These artworks are now displayed on the Stadium Connector Shared Use Path near Cinemark Theatre at Mesa Riverview. The installation was completed by Mesa's Transportation Department using thermal plastic heated with propane torches.
This year's competition attracted 150 submissions from young artists across three age categories: pre-k to 2nd grade, 3rd to 6th grade, and 7th to 12th grade. "A huge congratulations to our grand prize winners whose art is now on display for the whole city to enjoy!" reads a statement from the organizers. Second and third-place winners received prizes including gear from Mesa Public Library and Mesa's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program. All finalists were awarded certificates signed by city officials.
The public is encouraged to view these artistic displays at any time. A list of book recommendations curated by Mesa Public Library accompanies each design, promoting both biking and reading as enjoyable activities.
The winners include Kaylee Sherman for "A Need for Speed" in the Pre-K to 2nd Grade category; Trinity Ellis for "Different Types of Books" in the 3rd to 6th Grade category; and Alenna Bergen for "La Vista Desde El Desierto (The View from the Desert)" in the 7th to 12th Grade category.
