Mesa Public Library has announced the launch of "Mesa Reads," a year-long initiative to promote reading and literacy awareness. The program encourages community members to read for at least 15 minutes daily.

"Mesa Reads aims to be more than just a reading challenge; it's a movement to cultivate a culture of literacy and to emphasize the benefits of reading every day," according to the library's announcement. Participants can track their reading minutes using the Beanstack app or a paper log from the library's website. Those who log their minutes in Beanstack will be eligible for monthly prize drawings.

The initiative kicks off with events on January 11, 2025, at all library locations. Activities include a family book swap at Dobson Ranch Library, interactive activities at Red Mountain Library, storytime and bookmark creation at Mesa Express Library, and various activities including storytimes and a read-a-thon at the Main Library.

Throughout the year, Mesa Reads will host literacy programs, author events, and other community activities such as I Love Mesa Day on March 1, 2025, a Summer Reading Program from June 1 to August 1, One Book, One Mesa Community-Wide Read in Fall 2025, and a Winter Reading Program.

"A community that reads, succeeds," said Polly Bonnett, Director of Mesa Public Library. "We believe in the power of reading to transform lives, spark imagination and build connections. This initiative brings together residents, schools and other community partners to highlight what we can achieve when we unite around a common goal."

Mesa Reads is open to all residents without requiring a library card. However, Mesa Public Library cards are free for those living in Maricopa County under certain conditions. During January, existing cardholders can replace lost cards for free if there are no fines or fees on their account.
