Arizona State University (ASU) football coach Kenny Dillingham has achieved a remarkable transformation of the Sun Devils team in just one year. After finishing with a 3-9 record in 2023, Dillingham faced the challenge of rebuilding his roster for competitiveness in the Big 12.
Dillingham prioritized cultural fit over sheer talent when recruiting through the transfer portal, saying, “The hardest thing in this process is not saying yes to every really good player.” This strategy contributed significantly to ASU's turnaround from being predicted to finish last in their conference to securing an 11-2 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl on January 1.
The Sun Devils added 60 newcomers this season, including eight starters who joined via the transfer portal. Despite typically indicating a longer rebuild period, ASU’s rapid improvement was attributed by former quarterback and radio analyst Jeff Van Raaphorst to Dillingham's coaching acumen: “I think what it tells me is that he’s able to teach and get players to execute what he wants them to do very quickly.”
Key players like running back Cam Skattebo, quarterback Sam Leavitt, defensive back Xavion Alford, center Leif Fautanu, and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson have made significant impacts this season. Their contributions highlight Dillingham's success in selecting competitive athletes who align with his vision.
Dillingham emphasized his belief in culture and old-school principles despite his young age: “Even though I’m young, I still believe that culture is important … I still believe in all those old-school principles.” His approach has fostered team stability, with no players from ASU’s two-deep entering the transfer portal this year.
As they prepare for their upcoming playoff game and look ahead to future seasons, Dillingham remains optimistic about ASU’s environment: “I think people like being here... This is an unbelievable season. They’re treated well here.”
