Mesa Public Schools is facing significant challenges due to declining enrollment and financial constraints. The district has observed a decline in the number of incoming kindergarteners compared to graduating seniors, with 1,100 more seniors than kindergarteners this year. This trend aligns with an 18% decrease in birth rates across Arizona over the past decade and a 28% decline specifically in Mesa. For the next academic year, a reduction of 1,800 students is projected.

The district is also grappling with decreasing state and federal funding. The expiration of Proposition 123 in July 2025 will further impact finances alongside increasing operational costs. Despite these hurdles, Mesa Public Schools remains committed to its mission: "to know every student by name, serve them by strength and need, and ensure they graduate ready for college, career, and community."

To maintain this vision amid financial pressures, the district has assessed resources and staffing levels to align with its goals. Efforts include prioritizing safe learning environments and considering flexible staffing models to support student success.

Nearly 90% of the budget is allocated to employees whose roles are highly valued. However, an $18 million budget cut necessitates the elimination of some positions for the upcoming school year. Affected staff will be notified months in advance and provided with resources like resume assistance and mock interviews. They will also have opportunities to apply for other roles within the district.

Mesa Public Schools emphasizes resilience during these challenging times while ensuring students continue receiving quality education.
