Today, Congressman Andy Biggs from Arizona introduced a new legislative measure aimed at reducing government expenditure by halting the production of pennies for a decade. The proposed Currency Optimization, Innovation, and National Savings (COINS) Act of 2025 addresses the cost inefficiency highlighted in the U.S. Mint’s 2024 Annual Report, which revealed that producing a penny costs 3.69 cents.

"85 million taxpayer dollars were spent on the production of new pennies in 2024, and no one even batted an eye," stated Congressman Biggs. He emphasized the importance of supporting President Trump's efforts to eliminate government waste and fraud by codifying these measures into law. "President Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency have spent weeks rooting out government waste and fraud. Congress must support their efforts by codifying President Trump’s America First priorities—like his move to stop minting new pennies. At more than $36 trillion in debt, every single cent counts."

The legislation has garnered support from several cosponsors including Rep. Juan Ciscomani from Arizona, Rep. Barry Moore from Alabama, Rep. Randy Weber from Texas, and Rep. Lauren Boebert from Colorado.
