A recent workshop on starting a podcast for small businesses was held at The CATALYST in Gilbert’s Heritage District. Derek Konofalski of Sleepytime Studios led the session, providing participants with practical guidance on launching and managing podcasts.
The CATALYST serves as a small business accelerator, offering free access to various resources such as a podcast and audio recording studio, photography and video room with a green screen, and a mobile conference room equipped with technology for meetings. Local small businesses can reserve these spaces in advance.
During the workshop, attendees learned about the history of podcasting, planning podcast seasons, recording and editing techniques, and publishing content to platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and IHeartPodcasts. Marketing strategies for podcasts were also discussed.
Konofalski highlighted the importance of understanding the resources required for producing podcasts. He noted that podcasts can be effective tools for engaging both external audiences and employees within organizations. Internal podcasts were described as an alternative way to share information compared to traditional emails.
He said: “As a technologist and small business owner, I also like to talk about the resources, time, and energy that go into making a podcast. These shows are a great way to build engagement with listeners and even employees. Internal podcasts are a modern way to deliver information to your teams instead of emails that no one reads and that are ineffective. Sometimes, the best way to engage with podcast listeners is to be a guest on other podcasts rather than starting your own!”
Konofalski expressed enthusiasm about supporting The CATALYST’s Audio and Recording Room: “I’m so excited to be a sponsor of the Audio and Recording Room at The CATALYST because I love hearing how small businesses want to use technology to reach people and podcasts are no exception. Check out the workshop schedule and The CATALYST website for more resources available there. If your small business needs help with starting a podcast, media production, or any creative technology problem, check out the Sleepytime Studios website and book the Audio and Recording Room at CATALYST.”
He concluded by acknowledging those who make The CATALYST possible: “Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone at the Gilbert Chamber for hosting all these fantastic resources. The CATALYST is a wonderful resource and space but it’s the people and faces at the Chamber that make it a community center. Spaces like this wouldn’t exist without them.”
The event underscores ongoing efforts by local organizations such as Sleepytime Studios in partnership with facilities like The CATALYST—and supported by groups including the Gilbert Chamber—to provide technological resources aimed at helping small businesses grow through modern communication channels like podcasting.
