Arizona state Sen. Sonny Borrelli (R-Lake Havasu City) is pushing a proposal that would pave the way for the Department of Health Service (DHS) to randomly inspect medical marijuana kitchens.
The bill is the first to be introduced by Borrelli in the 2020 legislative session and marks the second straight session he has proposed the measure. In February 2019, no Democrat voted in favor of the measure, and Borrelli said he thinks he knows the reason.
“They have no clear-cut reason why to vote ‘no’ other than the marijuana industry doesn’t want any oversight whatsoever,” he told the Arizona Capital Times.
Borrelli said he is more hopeful this time around, particularly given DHS’ recent problems overseeung the creation of marijuana edibles in dispensary kitchens.
“[Inspectors] can go into everything from a Burger King to an abortion clinic unannounced – but not a dispensary,” Borrelli said, adding that if any other industry received notice before an inspection it would be ridiculous. “This is the only business that enjoys that huge benefit.”
