Gilbert, Arizona - Water Tower Plaza in Gilbert is set to undergo construction and design improvements starting in January 2024. The upgrades aim to enhance the vibrancy of downtown Gilbert for both residents and visitors. The decision to close the plaza temporarily was made due to the need for maintenance and improvements.

"The planned upgrades to Water Tower Plaza will add vibrancy and enhance the overall experience for the community," said a spokesperson for the town of Gilbert.

The construction closure will begin in January 2024 and is expected to last until the fall of the same year. During this time, the plaza will be closed to the public, and all concrete and some above-ground amenities will be temporarily removed.

"The underground infrastructure of Water Tower Plaza is outdated, and many replacement parts are no longer available," explained the spokesperson. "Therefore, it is necessary to close the plaza for construction and make the necessary upgrades."

While the closure may impact some community events typically held at Water Tower Plaza, the town of Gilbert assures residents that alternative locations will be provided. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on Gilbert events, programs, and activities through the online community calendar.

In preparation for the upcoming improvements, the town of Gilbert sought feedback from the community in 2022. Over 3,000 responses were received, with the most requested amenities including a shaded picnic area, restrooms, a grassy area for events, food truck connections, and a shaded splash pad.

"The community's input has been invaluable in shaping the future design of Water Tower Plaza," said the spokesperson. "We are committed to incorporating the requested amenities and ensuring that the plaza meets the needs and desires of the community."

Water Tower Plaza currently uses recirculated and sanitized water for all its features, with the amount of water usage being less than that of an average residential swimming pool. The upcoming improvements to the plaza will further increase water efficiency.

Architects have created designs for the enhanced plaza, which are available for viewing online. These designs take into account the community's input and aim to create a welcoming and enjoyable space for all.

Water Tower Plaza, a 0.7-acre park area surrounding the Gilbert Water Tower and Historic Adobe Pump House, opened in 2008. Located in the Heritage District on the southwest corner of Ash Street and Page Avenue, the plaza has been a popular gathering place for the past 15 years.

As the construction closure approaches, residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up for the Gilbert Parks and Recreation monthly newsletter to stay informed about the progress and future offerings of Water Tower Plaza.
