Gilbert, Ariz. - As the new year approaches, the Gilbert Fire and Police Departments are reminding residents to prioritize safety when it comes to fireworks. Non-aerial fireworks are permitted for use on private property from December 24 through January 3, as outlined by Arizona state law.

However, it is important to note that fireworks are strictly prohibited on public property, including parks, right-of-ways, and roads. Anyone found using fireworks outside of the allowed dates may face a civil penalty of $1,000. To ensure compliance, residents can find a list of permissible fireworks at gilbertaz.gov/fireworks.

The Gilbert Fire and Police Departments have provided a set of guidelines to ensure the safe use of fireworks. These include adult supervision at all times, avoiding loose clothing, and using fireworks only outside, away from dry shrubs or grass. Additionally, it is crucial to maintain a safe distance between spectators and fireworks and have a bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies. In the event of an injury or fire, it is important to call 9-1-1 immediately.

Improper disposal of fireworks can also lead to dangerous situations. Each year, Gilbert Fire & Rescue responds to fires caused by the improper disposal of fireworks in houses and garages. To prevent such incidents, it is recommended to soak used fireworks in a bucket of water for at least 24 hours. Afterward, the soaked fireworks should be double-wrapped in plastic bags and placed in the black trash container. It is essential to keep the trash container at least three feet away from any structures, such as garages, to ensure safety.

The use of illegal fireworks or fireworks outside of the allowed dates can be reported to the Gilbert Police Department's non-emergency line at (480) 503-6500. Reporting through this number is advised to avoid overwhelming the 9-1-1 system.

The Gilbert Fire and Police Departments also urge residents to be considerate of their neighbors when using fireworks. It is recommended to avoid lighting fireworks late at night and to be mindful that the loud noises may be troubling to combat veterans and neighborhood pets.

With these safety tips in mind, the Gilbert Fire and Police Departments wish everyone a Happy New Year. Let us all celebrate responsibly and prioritize the well-being of ourselves and our community.
