The Kyrene Elementary School District Governing Board initiated its first meeting of 2025 with the induction of three new members. On January 14, State Senator Mitzi Epstein swore in Amy Satre and Bunny (Ruth) Davis, while Tempe City Council Member Berdetta Hodge officiated the swearing-in for Cedric Collins. These new members will join existing board members Triné Nelson and Kevin Walsh.

In addition to welcoming new members, the board elected its leadership team for 2025. Current President Kevin Walsh was nominated by Cedric Collins to continue his role as President, while Collins also nominated Triné Nelson for Vice President. Both nominations received unanimous approval from the board. Leadership roles are determined annually at the first meeting of the year.

The timing of these changes aligns with national School Board Recognition Month. Superintendent Laura Toenjes acknowledged board members for their contributions to students and schools.

“This is a time to honor the extraordinary individuals who dedicate their time and vision to shaping the future of education in our community,” said Superintendent Toenjes. “We are fortunate to have such dedicated advocates for education, and I look forward to seeing how this team will make a lasting impact on our district for years to come.”

The Kyrene Governing Board oversees 25 schools within Ahwatukee, Chandler, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the Gila River Indian Reservation. It is empowered under Arizona law to establish organizational policies and holds responsibility for evaluating the Superintendent and governing the district.

Board members serve four-year terms, with elections occurring every two years during November's general election when either two or three positions are filled. Further information about the Kyrene Governing Board can be found at www.kyrene.org/governingboard.
