Gilbert, Ariz. - The first public meeting of the Gilbert Town Council’s Subcommittee on Teen Violence was held Thursday, January 18, 2024, inside Council Chambers.

Vice Mayor Scott Anderson was elected to be the subcommittee chair and will serve alongside council members Chuck Bongiovanni and Jim Torgeson. The subcommittee was established in response to the Gilbert Police Department’s investigation into teen violence.

In its initial meeting, the subcommittee discussed launching a youth violence survey, creating listening sessions and other ways to improve the lines of communication between the community and the council on key issues.

Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg provided an update on youth violence and general safety within the community.

Community members were provided an opportunity to speak at the meeting and offered feedback regarding communication opportunities with the subcommittee and the subcommittee’s desired outcome.

The subcommittee does not vote on action items but will make recommendations to the council at large. Members will provide an update at the next regular council meeting on January 23, 2024.
