Wendy Gerth starts her day early as one of the 55 nurses, 66 health assistants, and two classroom resource nurses serving Mesa Public Schools. Before classes begin, she reviews student health records and prepares medications. Her office sees a steady stream of students with various needs throughout the day.

An elementary school nurse plays multiple roles: caregiver, educator, and first responder. With over 35 years in nursing and 13 years in schools, Gerth is an essential part of Porter and Irving Elementary. Her experience and compassion are invaluable to the school community.

Gerth's day involves administering morning medications for chronic conditions like asthma, ADHD, and diabetes. She also handles minor injuries such as scraped knees or stomachaches. "Every case is different," she notes, emphasizing the balance between care and support.

Her responsibilities extend beyond first-aid. "Our fingers are in so many pots," Gerth states about her wide-ranging duties. She manages chronic illnesses, participates in care team meetings, conducts screenings, monitors absenteeism, educates on health topics, and connects families with resources.

Gerth collaborates with programs providing food and clothing to families in need. She coordinates immunizations and ensures all students receive necessary care. Whether assisting homeless students or referring families to local services, Gerth's role transcends traditional nursing duties. She is a vital community member offering healthcare, compassion, and guidance.
