Candice Gonzales, a dedicated girls' basketball coach at Mesquite High School, has received the Spirit of Cotton Award. This $10,000 recognition from the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation honors her for embodying the spirit of the late Phoenix Suns head coach, Cotton Fitzsimmons, through her positive impact on students and the community.
In her 27 seasons at Mesquite High, Coach Gonzales has focused on building unity within the Lady Wildcats basketball program. The team partakes in monthly team-building activities, fostering connections through shared events like painting, games, outings, and movie nights. This emphasis on camaraderie spans all levels of the girls' basketball program, enhancing athletes' relationships and understanding of the program.
“To build a team that has a true connection, you have to spend a lot of time together both on and off the court,” said Coach Gonzales. “We truly think of ourselves as a family.”
Aside from their strong team bonds, the Lady Wildcats engage actively with the community. They host basketball clinics for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The team also conducts an annual "shoe box drive," sending small presents to local elementary schools and frequently supporting organizations like Feed My Starving Children and local food banks.
"It's been incredibly rewarding to witness these young women grow, not just as basketball players, but as individuals who are making a real difference in their community," stated Coach Gonzales. "I couldn’t be more proud of everything they’ve accomplished."
Coach Gonzales has also translated this family-like culture to success on the court. In the past season, she led the Lady Wildcats to a 27-2 record, gaining them an #8 ranking among Arizona's high school girls' basketball teams by MaxPreps. The team was undefeated in the 4A Desert Sky Region and reached the quarterfinals of the Arizona Open State Championship. Furthermore, Coach Gonzales celebrated her 500th win and was named the 4A Desert Sky Region Coach of the Year.
She was honored during a pregame celebration at the Phoenix Suns' last home game of the regular season on April 11th. The $10,000 award will further support Mesquite High School's athletic programs, sustaining opportunities for student-athletes.
