Nominations for the City of Chandler's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Program will open on November 1. This annual event acknowledges local residents who have made significant contributions to fostering a compassionate and socially just community through their commitment to human and civil rights.
The awards are divided into three categories:
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award honors individuals whose work exemplifies Dr. King's values, particularly in promoting social and economic justice, defending civil rights, and enhancing the dignity of all people within the Chandler community.
The Emma Arbuckle Empowerment Award is named after Ms. Emma Arbuckle, a South Chandler resident known for her leadership and advocacy in the community. It recognizes those who create opportunities for leadership, racial equality, and solidarity.
The Youth Action Award targets students aged 18 or younger who actively promote non-violence, service commitment, and courage among peers while supporting Dr. King's values. The winner of this category will receive a $500 award.
Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m., Monday, December 9, at Chandler Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards site with details of the nominee's efforts and achievements. Nominees should be strong advocates for human and civil rights residing or working in Chandler or attending school there; specific criteria are available online.
Winners will be notified during the week of December 16, with an awards ceremony scheduled for Friday, January 17, 2025.
