Job fairs, while lacking the entertainment of traditional fairs, offer significant opportunities for career advancement. Attendees can benefit from these events by preparing effectively and presenting themselves professionally.

Carole Redden, Career Services supervisor at Rio Salado College, advises job seekers to make a strong first impression. "Employers want to get to know the real you," she said. "So smile, make eye contact, show your interest, and dress for success." Redden also emphasizes avoiding informal language: "We don't have to be perfect but we can put our best foot forward by avoiding slang, negative, or inappropriate language."

Preparation is key before attending a job fair. Researching companies that will be present allows candidates to tailor their resumes and questions accordingly. This preparation includes understanding logistical details such as dress codes and registration requirements.

A well-updated resume is crucial. It should highlight relevant skills and experiences tailored to potential employers' needs. Bringing letters of recommendation can also be beneficial.

An elevator pitch is another essential tool for job seekers. It should succinctly convey one's skills and how they align with the company's needs. Redden provides an example: "I am a business major at Rio Salado College. I have four years of customer service experience, great computer skills, and I love helping people! I'm looking to apply my skills and experience to a customer service role."

Finally, attendees should inquire about next steps in the hiring process after engaging with company representatives at the fair.

These strategies can be put into practice at JobFest 2024 on November 7 at Rio Salado’s Conference Center in Tempe.
