Rio Salado College has announced the formation of affinity groups aimed at enhancing student engagement and community building. These groups are a result of collaboration between the DEIB Council, Avanzar Team, Student Life, and other college staff, with support from the district. They are available to both students and employees.
The initiative aims to provide a platform for making connections, personal growth, and advocacy. Participants can expect campus events, workshops, mentorship opportunities, and a chance to influence change on issues they care about.
Several specific groups have been introduced:
- The Black and African American Affinity Group focuses on networking and cultural events under the leadership of Dr. Latrice Wilson and Dortrecia Adelis.
- The Enabled & Empowered Network supports individuals with disabilities in fostering inclusion and empowerment. Murray Inman and Gordon Inman serve as co-chairs.
- The First Generation Alliance provides resources for first-generation college students with Henry Smith and Clarice Wziatek as co-chairs.
- The Indigenous and Native American Affinity Group promotes cultural awareness led by John Bastian.
- The Latinx Alliance offers community-building programs led by Lulu Maldonado and Gabriela Holt.
- The LGBTQ2S+ Affinity Group is chaired by Dr. Brandon Ranallo-Benavidez and Eric Steele focusing on advocacy for LGBTQ2S+ members.
- Worthy Empowered Women aims to empower women through professional development under Sherri Moore's leadership.
These groups are designed to create an inclusive environment where participants can connect meaningfully. To join an existing group or propose a new one, interested parties should fill out the Affinity Group Interest Form or contact Reina Ferrufino via email.
