Arizona State University (ASU) has been recognized as a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader for the third consecutive year. This designation, awarded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, highlights ASU's contributions to the Hispanic community and its success in placing faculty and students into the Fulbright program.
ASU is among 28 doctoral-granting institutions nationwide to receive this honor, alongside the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. In total, 50 institutions were acknowledged.
ASU became a Hispanic-Serving Institution in June 2022, meeting the criteria of having at least 25% Hispanic undergraduate enrollment and offering substantial financial and academic support programs. The university supports initiatives such as El Concilio, the Hispanic Research Center, and the Hispanic Mother-Daughter Program.
Earlier this year, ASU was also recognized as a "top producing institution" for both Fulbright U.S. Scholars and Students. For the 2023–24 academic year, ASU ranked sixth for faculty awards with eight awardees and 21st for student awards with 16 awardees among doctoral-granting institutions.
The Fulbright program aims to foster mutual understanding between Americans and people from other countries since its inception in 1946. Kyle Mox from ASU noted that “the Fulbright mission of inclusion matches the ASU Charter,” emphasizing how their demographics contribute to Fulbright’s goals.
Nancy Gonzales, ASU executive vice president and university provost, stated that being recognized as a Fulbright HSI Leader underscores ASU's commitment to global exchange opportunities for historically underrepresented groups.
ASU provides support during the Fulbright application process through information sessions, workshops, and interview preparation led by ONSA. Karen Engler-Weber assists faculty members in identifying suitable awards and refining their project proposals.
Engler-Weber highlighted that “the work of the ASU Fulbright office...seeks to support ASU’s success in the Fulbright programs” while fostering an inclusive environment for international scholars on campus.
