The City of Mesa has been recognized globally by winning the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Innovation Award. This recognition places Mesa among only two cities worldwide and as the sole city in the United States to receive this honor, acknowledging its innovative sustainable development initiatives aligned with the United Nations' global goals.

The award ceremony took place in Munich, Germany, on December 7th. It celebrated Mesa's significant contributions to environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic development. Mayor John Giles received special recognition for his leadership and transformative impact during his tenure.

"This award solidifies Mesa's place as a global leader in sustainable development," stated Mayor John Giles. "It's an incredible honor to see our city's hard work, innovation, and commitment to a sustainable future celebrated on the world stage. I'm deeply proud of what we've accomplished together as a community."

The German SDG Award recognizes initiatives advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals such as climate action, quality education, and sustainable urban communities. Mesa's Climate Action Plan, Mesa College Promise program, and urban development strategies were highlighted as exemplary models for other cities.

"This victory underscores Mesa's commitment to innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision for a sustainable future," said Mesa City Manager Chris Brady. "Winning the SDG Innovation Award is a reflection of the extraordinary efforts of our city leaders, residents, and many community partners. We are proud to celebrate this historic achievement."

As Mayor Giles nears the end of his term, this prestigious recognition emphasizes his legacy of bipartisanship and dedication to future generations' well-being.
