The holiday season often brings stress, whether from travel, financial concerns over gifts, or family tensions. For those who feel anxious about social gatherings or spending extended time with family, there are strategies to maintain calm and enjoy the festivities.
One approach is planning. If attending a party or dinner seems overwhelming, consider having an exit strategy. Inform hosts of potential early departures due to prior commitments. Identify anxiety triggers and plan to avoid them. Consider which situations might lead to stress and who among the attendees can provide comfort.
Setting boundaries is another way to manage anxiety. Declining invitations is acceptable if it helps prevent overextension and stress. At events, establish clear boundaries; for instance, firmly refuse unwanted drinks or steer conversations away from uncomfortable topics.
Breathing exercises can help reduce stress by lowering blood pressure and heart rate. The 4-4-4 breathing technique—inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds—can be discreetly performed in public settings.
Redirecting attention can also ease discomfort in social situations. Asking others questions shifts focus away from oneself since people generally enjoy discussing their interests. Introducing individuals to each other can further divert attention.
Smiling and making eye contact during interactions may prevent appearing unapproachable, which could inadvertently attract more attention from those eager to engage with someone who seems in need of company.
