The start of a new year often brings renewed energy and a desire for self-improvement. Many people make ambitious New Year's resolutions, but these often fade away within weeks. Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) is committed to supporting students in achieving their goals beyond the classroom through various programs and initiatives.
Gilbert Public Schools offers a Personal Finance Diploma Seal program aimed at equipping students with financial literacy skills. "Save money" is regularly at the top of many New Year's resolutions lists, and GPS works to equip students with essential financial literacy skills to achieve this goal. The program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated proficiency in financial concepts like stock trading, credit card usage, and completing the FAFSA.
To earn this seal, students must complete tasks in four categories: curriculum, co-curriculum/extra-curricular activity, written reflection, and assessment. Students must also maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in social studies courses. The Arizona State diploma seal in Personal Finance is available to seniors at several high schools within GPS.
Eating healthier is another common resolution supported by GPS through its Nutrition Services team. They offer meals that include whole grains, protein, fruits, vegetables, and milk while ensuring quality ingredients are used. “Nutrition is important for a student to be able to learn,” stated Kristiann Frisby Champion, Nutrition Services Supervisor.
Exercise more or going to the gym are other popular resolutions addressed by GPS programs focusing on exercise and strength across multiple grade levels. At Highland Junior High School, weight training classes help students develop strength and improve fitness under guidance from Physical Education teacher Elizabeth Gonzalez.
Spending more time with family and friends is encouraged through afterschool programs like Carol Rae Ranch Elementary’s weekly fun run event that promotes healthy lifestyles while fostering community spirit.
Lastly, learning new skills or hobbies is facilitated by clubs such as the World Explorers' Club at Highland Park Elementary where students explore different cultures through activities that ignite curiosity and foster global perspectives.
From financial literacy programs to after-school activities promoting family bonding, Gilbert Public Schools goes beyond academics to equip students with life skills necessary for success.
