Chandler Vice Mayor Christine Ellis has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) University Communities Council and reappointed to the NLC Human Development Federal Advocacy Committee. Both appointments are for a one-year term, during which she will provide strategic direction and guidance for federal advocacy efforts.
Ellis emphasized the importance of social services, job training programs, and access to higher education in combating poverty. "Support from social services, job training programs and access to higher education are essential to leading people out of poverty," said Vice Mayor Christine Ellis. She noted Chandler's success in collaborating with educational partners to create career pathways.
The University Communities Council aims to ensure that university communities' needs are included in NLC’s advocacy work. It offers a platform for sharing ideas and solutions specific to these communities' challenges.
The Human Development Committee addresses social services, immigration reform, the opioid crisis, and workforce investment strategies. These initiatives support local economies through career and technical education.
Members of NLC Committees advocate on behalf of local communities by helping Washington D.C. policymakers understand their issues and challenges. Further information is available on NLC’s federal advocacy committees.
Ellis has served on the Chandler City Council since January 2021. Her roles also include serving on the NLC Women in Municipal Government, National Black Caucus, as Vice Chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Domestic Violence Council, and on MAG’s Human Services and Community Initiatives Committee.
