The Chandler Fire Department has introduced a new initiative, the Crisis Intervention Opioid Response Unit (CR2840), to address substance use disorders and opioid overdoses in the community. This program involves a team of crisis response professionals who will provide immediate intervention services during overdose incidents. The unit's focus is on saving lives by distributing Narcan (naloxone), a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.
The CR2840 unit will supply Narcan nasal spray to individuals at risk, as well as their friends and family members. Yasmin Barker, senior crisis interventionist for the Chandler Fire Department, stated, "Our mission is to offer more than just an emergency response. We are committed to helping individuals in crisis navigate the path to recovery." She emphasized the importance of equipping the community with Narcan and providing support to reduce the opioid epidemic's impact in Chandler.
Crisis response professionals from this unit will respond to 911 calls related to opioid overdoses, offering on-scene assistance and referrals for recovery services. Alongside Narcan distribution, they will educate people on prevention, recognizing overdose signs, and early intervention's significance.
This program collaborates with local agencies and hospitals to decrease overdose-related deaths and aid those battling opioid use disorder. By empowering families and the community with knowledge and tools for quick action in overdose situations, CR2840 aims to save lives and support long-term recovery efforts.
