Sports are playing a significant role in the development of students within Mesa Public Schools, thanks to the SPARC program. This initiative, a collaboration between the school district and the Mesa Police Department, is designed to offer fourth and fifth graders access to sports such as basketball and soccer. Through these activities, students who might not otherwise participate in extracurriculars can engage in learning experiences that extend beyond athletics.

The SPARC program emphasizes mentorship by involving Mesa police officers who guide students in developing teamwork, leadership, and life skills. The culmination of these workshops is a final game hosted at a feeder high school where participants can demonstrate their progress.

"Sports have a lasting impact on students that goes beyond athletic ability," said Nina Allred from Mesa Public Schools. "Through participation in sports, students develop essential life skills like resilience, communication, and confidence—things that will benefit them long after the game is over."

Webster and Adams elementary schools have seen the positive effects of this program. Kate Ryan, principal at Webster Elementary, highlighted its success: “It’s one of the best, most well-organized programs I’ve seen, and it was the highlight of the year for our students.”

The personal stories emerging from SPARC include that of Armondo from Adams Elementary. He experienced behavioral challenges but has made significant improvements through his involvement with SPARC. “I’ve learned how to be a good teammate and to never give up,” he shared.

The partnership between Mesa Public Schools and the Mesa Police Department has been recognized with an award from the Arizona School Public Relations Association for their dedication to student success.

“By focusing on enrichment and personal growth, SPARC strengthens the bond between students, schools and the broader Mesa community,” stated Dr. Andi Fourlis of Mesa Public Schools.
