Arizona State University (ASU) is in the midst of a significant construction boom, reflecting its commitment to growth and improvement. New projects include a seven-story student housing complex near Mill Avenue in Tempe, the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 12 (ISTB12) on the Polytechnic campus, and a 55,000-square-foot academic building on the West Valley campus.

Tim Smith, ASU’s vice president for facilities development and management, stated, “We don’t stop growing. It’s always about what’s next.” The university's expansion is driven by increasing enrollment numbers—over 181,000 students currently—and a push towards $1 billion in research expenditures. This growth necessitates more spaces for learning and discovery.

ASU has been recognized for leadership in federal and state initiatives addressing health, sustainability, semiconductors, and national security challenges. These efforts require specialized lab space and equipment. Construction projects set to finish in 2025 have an estimated budget of $600 million, with another $300 million slated for new projects this year.

Smith noted that such investment levels are unusual among universities both nationally and locally: “On a national perspective, a lot of schools are seeing their enrollment declining... ASU is just an anomaly.”

Morgan Olsen, ASU executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer explained that construction contributes economically through employment of professionals and purchase of materials: “Certain projects also will have indirect impacts such as fostering additional creative and economic activity.”

The Novus Innovation Corridor continues its expansion with new restaurants opening recently. The corridor will eventually feature public outdoor spaces along with multifamily units, hotel rooms, retail space, commercial offices expected to create 40 thousand jobs by 2035.

MacroTechnology Works at ASU Research Park includes an $80 million clean room project funded partly by federal resources. Smith described it as having "the highest degree of difficulty when it comes to constructing."

Other developments include modernization plans for existing buildings like Bateman Physical Sciences Center's H wing with renovations phased over time allowing ongoing classes during upgrades; while ISTB12 aims at providing cutting-edge research facilities focused on advanced manufacturing technologies within Ira A Fulton Schools Engineering School Manufacturing Systems Networks scheduled open fall semester next year.
