The Vision Gallery in Chandler, Arizona, is set to unveil a new group exhibition titled "M | otherworlds." This exhibit features regional artists from Arizona who are also mothers. The artwork explores the transitional phase of new parenthood during the early postpartum years, known as matrescence or mother-becoming.
The exhibition will open on March 22 and remain on display until June 7. It delves into themes of identity, caretaking, and imaginative world-building, with the title "M | otherworlds" reflecting the surreal experience of this life stage. According to curator Ashley Czajkowski, "As a new parent, I found the transition into motherhood and the postpartum period to be more challenging, surprising, but also rewarding than I expected. And while all mothers experience a great identity shift during this time, I believe it is even more profound for women artists whose creative practices and identity as artists often directly conflict with the expectations and notions of motherhood. I want this exhibition to speak to these experiences and highlight mother voices that are so often unheard in the art world."
An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 21, from 6-8 p.m., with RSVPs available through Eventbrite. The Vision Gallery operates Monday through Saturday with varying hours and offers free admission.
Vision Gallery is part of a nonprofit supported by the Chandler Cultural Foundation and exhibits works from over 300 regional artists. The gallery also supports educational workshops through its Vision Kids program.
