On a typical Tuesday morning, Eli Duncan's classroom at Westwood High School is filled with the aroma of peanut butter as students engage in making Barkin’ Buddies Biscuits. This initiative is part of the Warriors On-The-Job program, which provides students with various abilities meaningful employment experiences. The program helps them acquire job skills, build confidence and independence, and contribute positively to the community.
Eli Duncan explains, “We have a variety of students with different disabilities and a range of abilities to work. We believe they can all contribute at some level.” The student-run enterprise aims to teach workplace fundamentals through practical experience.
Marah, a senior in the program who has cerebral palsy, plays an essential role by interacting with customers using a tablet that vocalizes her selections. She asks questions like, “What kind of dog do you have—small, medium or large? How many bags would you like to purchase? Thank you for your purchase.”
Problem-solving is integral to the program. When Marah had difficulty holding her stylus, fellow students designed a custom holder for her. They also crafted paw print-shaped cookie cutters for biscuit production.
Angela Edelbrock, district occupational therapist and former chef, contributes industry insights such as efficient use of ingredients and portion control techniques.
The Warriors On-The-Job program collaborates with businesses like Marriott Hotels in downtown Mesa. Here, students gain real-world experience while Marriott employees assist them in developing job skills within an inclusive workforce environment. Students also sell their homemade dog treats at this pet-friendly hotel.
Duncan highlights the dedication of his students: “One of the great things about our students is their outstanding work ethic. They work hard, arrive on time and rarely call out sick. Their attention to detail is unmatched.”
Looking forward to the 2025-26 school year, Duncan plans to expand Barkin’ Buddies' presence through social media to enhance community engagement and awareness about their activities.
