Agritopia, a master-planned community in Gilbert, has started construction on an upscale retail and residential center in the middle of its downtown area.
According to AZ Central, the final piece of the community, Epicenter will feature almost 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space on the ground level and 320 luxury apartments above.
"This corner will be such an incredible part of our community long into the future for the next 100 years and beyond, and the legacy will continue," Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels told AZ Central.
Agritopia, a sprawling 166-acre development, was created by Joe and William Johnston, a family of Gilbert farm owners who wanted to preserve their land when the community grew into a suburb. The community's website states that it aims to be a place where people come together. They promote a close-knit community with low fences, porches, parks and walkable areas. The community's 11-acre certified organic farm produces produce for surrounding restaurants and the community.
Epicenter is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
