Dr. Patricia Hernandez, Faculty Chair for Addiction Studies and Behavioral Science at Rio Salado College, has been honored with the 2024 Community Circle Award by the Arizona Association of Addiction Professionals (AAAP). This accolade acknowledges her significant contributions to addiction counseling advocacy.
The award specifically highlights Hernandez's efforts in the passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1062. "I am honored and flattered to be recognized," said Hernandez. She described the legislative process as a rewarding learning experience.
Senate Bill 1062 broadens the scope of substance abuse counseling to encompass treatment for all forms of addiction characterized by persistent, compulsive dependence on behaviors or substances. The bill also introduces a terminology change recommended by AAAP, shifting from "substance abuse counselor" to "addiction counselor." According to Hernandez, this change was advocated because "substance abuse" is considered outdated and stigmatizing, while "chemical dependency" does not accurately define addiction.
Hernandez's work extends beyond legislation; she has played a pivotal role in certifying new addiction professionals through scholarship programs. In 2023, scholarships funded by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) were made available to students in Rio Salado's addiction programs. These scholarships aim to enhance career development and educational opportunities.
"Our society is in dire need of dedicated behavioral health providers who can make a lasting impact on individuals' lives," stated Hernandez. She emphasized the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals and the emerging opportunities for students aspiring to develop necessary skills.
Rio Salado College offers an addictions program featuring online classes, affordable tuition, and experienced instructors. "Rio’s programs are designed to meet state licensure and national accreditation standards," noted Hernandez. Students engage in practicums under licensed professionals' supervision, benefiting from adjunct faculty who are active practitioners in the field.
